Intro to Newspaper Design-Front Pages of the World

1. My favorite newspaper front page is The Birmingham News (Ala. USA) because the newspaper is well organized and easy to read. It also has a "leading" photograph that is well focused and grabs the reader's attention. The font is also consistent and easy to follow when reading.
2. My favorite headline from the newspaper is "The Fight To Make It Out Alive" because the font is big and caught my attention. I also thought it was catchy and not straight forward. That being said, one must read the article in order to find out what they are talking about "making it out alive."
3. There are six stories on the front page.
4. What I notice in every newspaper is that there is always a main photograph (a photo bigger than the rest) and captures the readers attention. The headlines are always in bold I think for the reader to know what they are reading about. Many newspapers also provide quotes and surveys which I think are included for individuals to hear other people's opinions. Newspapers also are consistent with their font type and the layout is easy to read.
5. Newspapers also make their newspaper unique and "their own" through their layout or style of getting their message and stories across. The font sizes of headlines also vary.

1. What I liked about our school newspaper compared to others was the layout of how the text or information was laid out. There was not too much information nor were there too little stories.
2. The headlines stood out to me in our newspaper.
3. The stories I found interesting to read were the school evaluations and horse back riding stories.
4. I believe not much improvement is needed in the newspapers.
5. Yes, this newspaper follows the rules and guidelines like the other papers.
6. Like I mentioned before, the information was well though out and was well organized.

Website Review

I looked at the website that was called Lens. At first I predicted that the stories were not going to be well written or were not going to be interesting to read. However my prediction was incorrect. The intention of the website is to share updated information that is occurring around the world on a daily bases. People can read articles not only from where they live, but get a "dose" of events that occur all around the world. The stories were not only intriguing to read, but the photographs were well captioned which was good for me to read since I have trouble thinking and creating captions for my own photographs. I also really enjoyed viewing the photographs because the angles the were taken in were unique and each photo was in a different position or "point of view." By viewing the variety of photographs, individuals can obtain ideas for how to position their own photographs. It is also very easy for one to find an article that will interest them. Therefore in my opinion, I would save this website to my bookmarks because from what I have read there are many interesting articles to read and I think this website is a good source for one to obtain information if they are interested in learning about other countries other than the one they currently live in. As I mentioned above, I would recommend this website to others only if they are interested in reading and retrieving information about current events that occur all over the world as well as viewing the well taken photographs related to the article.

I would rate this website a five out of a scale of five because not only are the stories and captions well written, but they engage the reader and include well taken photographs related to the article.

This is one of my favorite photographs from an article on the Lens website. The article talks about saving shelter dogs in Miami. It was written on February 16, 2017 by Evelyn Nieves. The article talks about how the dogs are experiencing depression because they are captivated. It also describes the space limitations they have. Although this article is very sad, it encourages individuals to adopt a dog in need than buy one from a store or simply volunteering at a shelter and show affection towards the dogs. This photo shows a pit bull named King, that made it out of the shelter. I like this photograph so much because of how the dog is in focus. I chose to share this picture on my blog because I like the perspective in which is was taken and the composition rules that is seen such as balance and frame. Not only is the picture well taken and very clear, but the message of the article is inspiring to me.

Self Portrait vs. The Selfie

Selfies and Self Portraits have their differences and similarities. Some say that selfies and self portraits have a lot in common or have a relation. However, many others disagree saying that selfies are equivalent to self portraits and have their own history and uniqueness.

A selfie specifically refers to a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media. They are taken at arms length or directly into a mirror. Many believe that selfies are their own genre, have their own techniques, own visual language, and have their own meanings. Not much thought is put into a selfie compared to a self portrait which requires a lot of thought such as the background, the perspective, the clothing, the lighting, and the face expression of the subject. The perspectives and angles in selfies are distinctive. They also promote active discussion and responses. It is said that selfies have existed as far back as when photography existed.

Meanwhile, a self portrait is a portrait of an artist produced or created by that artist. Therefore, self-portraits can be drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist. Self-portraits are made to be read as art. They can be displayed in museums or galleries. An artist could choose to represent him or herself through selfies, however, self-portraits are not considered or called selfies.

I personally prefer the selfie because it is easier, faster, and more useful to take rather than a self portrait. I also do not think that one is more valuable than the other because they used differently and the capture subjects in different positions and angles.
